One thing I've found that's helped me become more knowledgeable is to watch the Thunder Show at Wine Library TV. Well, in episode 429, Gary Vaynerchuk listed Canada's Lake Erie region as one of the top three hot up and coming areas of the world for wine. Specifically, he mentioned Pelee Island, which is just north of Kelley Island. Even though Gary didn't give the three wines he reviewed awesome reviews, he still stands by his initial contention.

Sounds like a summer road trip is in order. Andy, care to go?

The 5th annual Columbus Food & Wine Affair will be held on Friday, September 7, from 7-10 pm.

Here's what the website says about the Affair:

In a relatively short time, the Columbus Food & Wine Affair has gained a reputation as a Mecca for culinary industry professionals as well as for foodies and wine enthusiasts. The affair showcases the finest Central Ohio chefs as well as some of the world’s most superb vintners. Columbus Food & Wine Affair underscores that the optimum in food and wines can be found right here in Columbus, reminding residents that you don’t have to go far for a dish that’s to “die for” or a glass of wine with the perfect finish.

The event will be at the Franklin Park Conservatory and costs 0 per person. Proceeds go to the following charities: Central Ohio Restaurant Association, WBNS 10TV Family Fund, Adventures for Wish Kids, and United Way of Central Ohio.

If you can't spare the Benjamin, and you're in the restaurant industry, they're holding a Hospitality Trade Sneak Peak from 2-4. Cost is .00 and all they ask is for proof of employment, e.g. business card or pay stub.

Hmmm. I wonder if occasional food critic on the 270 and the Fine Repast qualifies as restaurant industry employment. ; )

In search of more food in the University of Cincinnati campus area, I stumbled upon Myra's Dionysus (not as hard as it looks to say). Okay, I had to look and figure out who exactly Dionysus was. According to Wikipedia, Dionysus is the greek god of wine, representing the intoxicating power of wine but also its social and beneficial influences. The Romans referred to him as Bacchus. Myra (the owner) apparently did not name her restaurant, Dionysus, to suggest that wine is a significant part of the menu (I didn't notice any such offering at lunch). Rather, "I wanted to signal that it was a somewhat Greek restaurant but with other offerings from around the world."

I'm starting to get into wine just like my pal Andy over at the Fine Repast blog.

Hmmm. I wonder if occasional food critic on the 270 and the Fine Repast qualifies as restaurant industry employment. ; )

I'm starting to get into wine just like my pal Andy over at the Fine Repast blog.

Hmmm. I wonder if occasional food critic on the 270 and the Fine Repast qualifies as restaurant industry employment. ; )

I'm starting to get into wine just like my pal Andy over at the Fine Repast blog.

The above photo is of the grape vines of Corazon, a Tartan Fields development in Dublin. I'm not sure if they make wine from the grapes, but there are some Vineyards in the Columbus area. Ohio Wines list two vineyards: Slate Run Vineyard in Canal Winchester and Shamrock Vineyard in Waldo. (I don't think Georgetown Vineyards in Cambridge really qualifies as Central Ohio.) And Alive! mentions Willow Hill Vineyards and Winery in Johnstown. Looks like a field trip is in order.

UPDATE: Shamrock's Twilight Dinners sounds like a fun event. I'd have to see what type of Veggie meal they have for my wife though.
