Cyclist killed during TOSRV

The Dispatch reports that a cyclist was killed while riding the Tour of the Scioto River Valley.

William Crowley, 57, of Northville, Mich., was riding alone north near Piketon. He was thrown from the bicycle and died at the scene about 7:50 a.m., the patrol said.

The driver of the SUV, Sara Bender, 35, was not injured, the patrol said.

After hitting Crowley, she drove to her home in Lucasville in Scioto County and returned to the scene about a half hour later, said Sgt. Brandon Cruz, the Highway Patrol officer overseeing the patrol’s coordination of the tour.

Tour director Charles Pace said Crowley was not on the tour route at the time. Some cyclists, apparently to save time, choose to take Rt. 23 instead of the official route on Rt. 104, though tour officials discourage the practice, he said.

I hate it when things like this happen, especially since I’m a cyclist. Be careful out there folks.

Time for me to start riding my bike into work

For years I worked Downtown and wanted to commute into work by bike. But I didn’t because it’s too far. Now I work only 5 miles away from home. So I tell myself that I’ll start in the spring.

But Bike Commuting in Columbus puts me to shame! Read his story about commuting in the recent “Blizzard”. There is absolutely no excuse for me not to start now.

So I guess I’ll have to dig out my bike and start riding in to work. Plus, I hear that gas prices is on the rise. Thus, now is a good time to start.

The World Naked Bike Ride in Columbus?

Doubtful.

Just what is the World Naked Bike Ride? Well, it’s a worldwide annual event to protest cars and oil. It’s kind of an environmental movement. In your birthday suit.

Is there an event in Columbus? According to the website, no. The closest ride is in Detroit. But I did nominate Columbus as a lark.

Will I ride? No. It’s not that I don’t mind getting naked in public. I’ve been to Blacks Beach in San Diego and Little Beach in Maui. And as the saying goes … when in Rome. But getting naked in my hometown. I don’t think I’d have the balls to do that. (pun intended)

This is not bike commuting, it’s free downtown parking

Trust me, there’s nothing more I’d like to do than commute to work by bike. The benefits include exercise, saving the environment, saving on gas money, and saving on parking. But, the commute to Dublin is a bit far to downtown. Plus, there’s no showers where I work.

A few years back, I used to park at Lane Avenue Shopping Center and bike in. Now, with 2 kids, I unfortunately don’t have the time to do that.

So this is what I have been doing. Driving to Confluence Park and biking in from there. So I get a little exercise. Don’t really save the environment. Don’t save on gas. But, I get free parking. Pretty lame, eh?Bike on Rack @ Confluence Park

Bicylist killed on Snouffer Road

The Dispatch reports a bicylist was killed today on Snouffer Road near Smokey Row Road.  That’s definitely sad.  Worse, the person that hit the bicylist fled the scene.

The hit must have occured late at night, because the man’s body was found at 4 am.

While I don’t fault the bicylist, I would never ride my bike on Snouffer Road (even in the daytime).  It’s just too narrow and dangerous.

Seagull Bags, the ultimate in edgy messenger bags

Man, I thought I was cool when I bought my timbuk 2 messenger bag. Now, I’m thinking it’s so corporate.

Take a look at the offerings from Columbus based Seagull Bags. Now those are some cool m fing bags. Plus, you’ve just got to love their logo which is the state of Ohio with a stylized seagull. Brilliant! Who would have thought that the shape of Ohio could be so cool. (sorry, I think I just exceeded my cool limit) Make sure you check out the gallery.

Tour de Grandview Pictures

As promised, below is a slideshow of last Sunday’s Tour de Grandview. They are of the first two races.

While I enjoyed watching the races, I was a bit disappointed that there weren’t any booths or things to do for the kids. I was going to complain here on the 270, but to be fair, they only advertised that such activities would be on Saturday. But I think that was a mistake on the organizer’s part. Half the fun of going to the races are the side activities. Witness the carnival atmosphere preceding the racers of the Tour de France. TdG organizers: give us that carnival atmosphere, and make it an event that everyone wants to go to.
