Can you imagine Columbus residents producing and filiming television series for broadcast of over the air television tv?

I can.

Recently, I had lunch with Ch.4 managing editor Ryan Squire (name drop), and he mentioned something about the ability to multicast when tv goes all digital in February of 2009.

What is multicasting?

Multicasting allows broadcast stations to offer several channels of digital programming at the same time, using the same amount of spectrum required for one analog program. So, for example, while a station broadcasting in analog on channel 7 is only able to offer viewers one program, a station broadcasting in digital on channel 7 can offer viewers one digital program on channel 7-1, a second digital program on channel 7-2, a third digital program on channel 7-3, and so on. This means more programming choices for viewers.

After hearing Ryan’s explanation, my mind went into overdrive thinking about the possibilities. One such possibility is to create a mini-Hollywood right here in Columbus, with local talent creating and producing television shows to fill the programming needs our local stations will suddenly face.

Imagine. You have an idea for a sitcom. You pitch it to Channel 4. They agree to pick it up. They pay for your show. They get advertisers. And maybe, if you’re show is good enough, you get noticed from the real Hollywood. Far fetched? I hope not. If anyone is interested in fleshing this idea out with me, give me a shout and lets get it rolling.
