Local Guitarist Builds the People’s Amp

“I just wanted an amp that didn’t suck! So I built my own!”

Local guitarist Karl Wohlwend (www.columbusclassicalguitar.com, www.dbmusicproduction.com), of Irish powerhouse band, Knot Fibb’n (www.knotfibbn.com) and The Mac (www.themacmusic.com) has opened his amplifier building operation, The People’s Amplifier. Frustrated with the lack of good quality amplifiers available for reasonable prices, Karl started building amps for his own use about 3 years ago. After countless hours of tinkering and research, he arrived at the design for The People’s Amplifier, which is an 18 watt, all-tube amp head based on the legendary Marshall Bluesbreaker Jr. With the People’s Amplifier, Karl hopes to de-mystify the often confusing market for so-called “boutique” amplifiers. By building one very good and simple design, with no customization, using generic-but-high-quality components, Karl is able to offer The People’s Amplifier at the amazingly low cost of $799, in a market dominated by amps costing 3 to 4 times that much.
