I went to renew my license plate the other day. For as long as I can remember, I wrote my check out to BMV. But now, they require that you make the check payable to “Ohio Treasurer Richard Cordray.”

What the heck? It seems to be a ploy by Mr. Cordray to keep his name in the minds of the voting public. Hey, I voted for Rich, but this is bush. It reminds me of the criticism that the democrats had against Secretary Blackwell with his “Change the World, Vote” campaign that prominently displayed Blackwell’s name. I thought they had a valid complaint, so it is disappointing when you see this same kind of stuff from a democrat.

Plus, this kind of thing could lead to embezzlement. Maybe not by Mr. Cordray, but there are plenty of dishonest politicians out there. Think of former Franklin County Clerk of Courts Jesse Oddi. Taking Mr. Oddi as an example, he could have made people make checks payable to “Jesse Oddi Franklin County Clerk of Courts.” A little bit of elbow grease or solvent, and the check could be made payable to “Jesse Oddi” only. And voila, free money.

[Disclosure: I used to work for Secretary Blackwell, and while I might not agree with his far right policies, I respect him as a person and wish him well with his political future. I used to claim I was a republican, but now I claim no party affiliation.]
