Ying’s Teahouse and Yum Yum Pork Dumplings
Pork Dumplings at Ying’s Teahouse and Yum Yum

FineRepast finally made it over to Ying’s Teahouse and Yum Yum in Clintonville, Ohio. Ying asked me what I wanted and I said – “Only the best!” She said that many Americans like to order General Tso’s chicken. I replied that I wasn’t interested in Americanized Chinese Food. So she served me up the Pork Dumplings with Won Ton soup. I have to admit that I’m a huge fan of the dumplings at Spring of China, so I was interested to see how Ying’s homemade stacked up against some of the finest dumplings that I had had.

Thanks for that. I drive by it every day and have been curious. I might just chekc it out.

If you want "so darn authentic Chinese you might not eat it", try Hometown Buffet in the plaza at the corner of Bethel and Olentangy. My Taiwanese mother-in-law loves it.

This place is nothing to brag about. We placed an order to go and waited nearly 30 minutes before getting up to leave. Then someone rushed over and said that they didn’t know we were waiting (huh? we placed an order “to go”). Finally, we take our lukewarm dinner home. The soups were decent but the sesame shrimp was awful. They used Seapak breaded shrimp (the kind you buy at Kroger, with the tails still on), and stir fried it with sauce. I could have done this at home. I just feel like they’re taking advantage of people who they “believe” don’t know a thing about Chinese cooking. I know authentic when I eat it, and this place is not authentic. Waste of money and a huge disappointment.

My friend and I went to this resturant tonight. First thing I noticed when I walked in was the greasy smell of the place. I ordered the Tofu Skin Wraps and San Zian Dumplings, my friend ordered General Tso's Shrimp. My food was authentic and I enjoyed both of them. I could tell that the wrapping of the dumpling was made by hand and appreciated the work that went into the food. My friend's order, on the other hand, was not authentic so I did not enjoy it but he did. The shrimp was tiny and it seemed like it was frozen before it was dipped in batter that was too thick. The sauce was too salty and I wished it came with more vegetables.

The service was quick and courteous. The cookie that came with the bill was very good. My friend commented that the music was too soothing; "Like love music for pandas in heat". If you are looking for authentic food, be careful what you pick from the menu.
