Byways.org has a suggested route and itinerary to travel the Historic National Road. It starts from West Jefferson and goes to Flint Ridge State Memorial. Here’s the itinerary. Google maps provides the route (note that I clicked on the avoid highways box to stay on the 40, rather than taking the 270).
