I recently saw a commercial from Time Warner promoting it’s Local On Demand channel 1111. Intrigued, I went there thinking that there would be some public access shows. (Think Wayne’s World). But, nope. It looked like pretty standard fare. Stuff from WOSU. The Parade of Homes. Stuff for seniors. Etc. Yawn!
Time Warner, why not have a sort of public access on demand channel. Actually, scratch that. Not public access, because we don’t want it falling prey to budgetary cuts like it did six years ago.
Here’s what I’m thinking. Host a site or partner up with YouTube. Solicit local filmmakers and producers to upload their videos. Viewers then go on the site and vote for their favorite videos. The top vote getters get their work shown on the Local On Demand channel. That’s it.
The voting will help filter out the crap. And the filmmakers get to show their work in high quality television. And we get to see how creative Columbus can be.
