Or maybe this should be entitled, “Reducing Emissions in the 270.” Either way, they both work. If I find myself waiting in my car in line at the drive thru teller or in almost any other situation where I’m going to be waiting for a while with the engine running, I shut my engine off. I really don’t think it’s that much wear and tear on the starter motor. Just think, if everyone in the 270 refused to let their car idle for an extra 10 minutes a day that would add up to a lot less emissions and a lot less wasted gas.
Want to use less gas, reduce emissions, and decrease our dependance on foreign oil? Then consider these other tips:
1 - Group several errands together and find the most efficient route.
2 - Check your tires for proper inflation at least once a month.
3 - Don’t use your car or trunk as a storage container. Those 50-100 or so extra pounds add up to using more gas. Remove the golf clubs, file boxes, weight sets, etc. If you are daring, remove the spare tire and accessories as well. Why do you think auto makers came out with those spare tire donuts? That’s right, to make their cars get better gas mileage.
4 - Run to the grocery store or do other errands at night when there’s less traffic. You’ll spend less time idling at red lights and stuck in traffic.
5 - Follow the speed limit. You’ll also save money on speeding tickets.
6 - Replace your air filter on a regular basis.
7 - Form a car pool.
Perhaps this topic can lead Al and me to a debate on the merits of hybrid cars? Al, you game?
